Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes

The delicious flavors of the South are only 30 minutes away with this simple air fryer fried green tomatoes recipe. Fresh green tomatoes are covered in a cornmeal coating and air fried to a delightful crisp.

EQUIPMENT

  • Air Fryer
  • Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Whisk

INGREDIENTS
  

  • 2 large green tomatoes
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 pinch pepper
  • 1 pinch sugar, optional
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • oil spray

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Slice the tomatoes into ¼-inch thick slices and sprinkle them with salt, pepper, and sugar (if desired). Set aside.
  • In a small bowl, pour in the flour.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together milk and eggs.
  • In another bowl, mix together cornmeal, bread crumbs, garlic powder, and paprika. 
  • Spray the air fryer basket with oil spray.
  • Taking one slice of tomato at a time, dredge it lightly in the flour, dip it in the egg mixture, completely coat it with the cornmeal mixture, then set it in the air fryer. Repeat until the air fryer basket is full.
  • Generously spray the coated tomato slices with oil.
  • Cook the tomatoes at 400°F for 8 minutes. Flip them over and generously spray again with oil. Continue cooking at 400°F for another 8 minutes.

NOTES

  • To make dredging easier (and cleaner), I recommend lining up your bowls in order of use, with the cornmeal closest to the air fryer. 
  • For that satisfying crunch, don’t make the flour coating too thick. You should be able to see some of the tomato through it. 
  • Be sure to cook the tomato slices with spaces between each one in a single layer. You may have to cook them in batches.
