How to Make Fried Green Tomatoes in the Air Fryer
- Slice the tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices and sprinkle them with salt, pepper, and sugar (if desired). Set aside.
- In a small bowl, pour in the flour.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together milk and eggs.
- In another bowl, mix together cornmeal, bread crumbs, garlic powder, and paprika.
- Spray the air fryer basket with oil spray.
- Taking one slice of tomato at a time, dredge it lightly in the flour, dip it in the egg mixture, completely coat it with the cornmeal mixture, then set it in the air fryer. Repeat until the air fryer basket is full with a single layer.
- Generously spray the coated tomato slices with oil.
- Cook the tomatoes at 400°F for 8 minutes. Flip them over and generously spray again. Continue cooking at 400°F for another 8 minutes.
Helpful Notes:
- To make dredging easier (and cleaner), I recommend lining up your bowls in order of use, with the cornmeal closest to the air fryer.
- For that satisfying crunch, don’t make the flour coating too thick. You should be able to see some of the tomato through it.
- Be sure to cook the tomato slices with spaces between each one in a single layer. You may have to cook them in batches.
Storage and Reheating Instructions:
These air fryer fried green tomatoes will last for days in the fridge and make for a great snack!
IN THE FRIDGE: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
IN THE FREEZER: These fried green tomatoes aren’t great candidates in the freezer. I recommend you make a fresh batch when you’re craving them.
REHEATING INSTRUCTIONS: To reheat, place the leftovers in the air fryer at 350°F for 5-8 minutes, flipping part way through. To get them even crispier, spray again with oil.
FAQS
Yes, they are regular tomatoes that haven’t matured on the vine yet.
These air fryer fried green tomatoes can be eaten with just about anything! Dip them in your favorite sauce, like a remoulade or ranch to have as a snack or appetizer, or eat them alongside fish, seafood, or at brunch!
I recommend sticking to green tomatoes for this recipe. Green tomatoes are firmer and drier than ripened ones, so they’re less likely to fall apart in the air fryer.
