How to Make Fried Apples in the Air Fryer
- Use an apple peeler to peel the skins off each apple. Cut apples in half, then into ½ inch wedges.
- Whisk together the flour, apple pie spice and cinnamon in a medium bowl.
- Transfer the flour mixture to a large plastic bowl with a lid then add all the apple wedges. Shake vigorously to coat all sides of the apples.
- Use a wire ladle (or large slotted spoon) to remove the apple wedges from the Tupperware bowl. Shake off the excess flour mixture and place the wedges on a plate to prepare them for dredging.
- In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and vanilla extract.
- Then, dredge a few apples at a time in the egg mixture and return the wedges to the excess flour mixture and shake them all again to create a second coating.
- Mix together the brown sugar and remaining 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and set aside.
- Add the coated apple fries to the air fryer basket in a single layer (you will need to make these in two batches).
- Liberally spray the top facing apples with vegetable or canola oil then sprinkle some of the brown sugar/cinnamon coating on top of each apple, cook for 6 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Open the basket, flip the apples, spray, and sprinkle the other sides of the apples. Then, return the basket and cook for an additional 6 minutes.
- Serve with caramel sauce or a simple powdered sugar glaze!
Helpful Notes:
- To make a quick powdered sugar glaze that tastes amazing with apple fries, mix 1 cup of powdered sugar with 2-3 tablespoons of apple cider. Whisk until smooth. If you don’t have apple cider, milk or half and half will also work.
- Make sure to leave room between your apple fries in the air fryer. You don’t want them to be touching, or the apple fries won’t develop a crispy crust.
Storage and Reheating Instructions:
Apple fries are best eaten fresh and hot. If you have leftovers and you really want to save them, here’s how.
IN THE FRIDGE: Store your leftover apple fries in a Ziploc bag or wrap them in plastic wrap. Make sure they’re completely cooled before you wrap them. You can keep them in the fridge for up to 2 days.
IN THE FREEZER: We don’t recommend freezing air fried apple fries.
REHEATING INSTRUCTIONS: Turn your air fryer back up to 350 and allow it to heat. Meanwhile, allow your apple fries to sit on the counter. Place your leftover apple fries in the basket and heat for about 5 minutes before eating.
