How to Make Crispy Crowns in the Air Fryer
- Pour the frozen crispy crowns into the air fryer basket and spread them out evenly to sit in a single layer. (They can be touching but shouldn’t be overlapping a ton, this allows each hash brown to cook evenly and get extra crispy).
- Salt and Pepper the crispy crowns if you would like then air fry on 400 degrees F for 7 minutes.
- Open the basket and shake the crowns, flip them over, then air fry for another 5-7 minutes or until the crowns reach your desired crispiness.
- Serve warm with ketchup.
Helpful Notes:
- There is no need to use a preheated air fryer to make these, I tested them both ways and they cook exactly the same but not preheating saves you a few extra minutes!
- Feel free to spray your crispy crowns with cooking oil or cooking spray if you prefer but I found it wasn’t necessary.
- Be sure to give the potato crowns a good shake halfway through cooking to stop them from sticking together, this can be a little challenging in smaller air fryers so you may need to cook in smaller batches.
Recipe Tips & Adaptations
- If you want to try different flavors with your crispy crowns try sprinkling them with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika or any of your favorite seasonings. If you’re daring, sprinkle them with taco seasoning and dip them in cheese sauce for.
- For extra crunchy crowns, try adding a little extra oil before placing them in the air fryer basket and increase the cooking time in 1-minute intervals until your desired level of crispiness is achieved.
- While there may be different brands, this recipe was created with Ore-Ida products. For best results stick with this tried and tested brand.
How To Store and Reheat Crispy Crowns:
Leftover crispy crowns can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in the air fryer or oven for a few minutes before serving to return to their crispy perfection.
Make sure to spread them out in a single layer before turning the air fryer on.
FAQS
No, you do not need to preheat your air fryer for this recipe. Preheating the air fryer does not affect the cooking time or taste of these crispy crowns.
Crispy crowns are delicious served as a potato side dish with your favorite main course. You can serve these any time you’d usually serve french fries, hash browns, or tater puffs.
Alternatively, you can turn them into a delicious and tasty dinner with the crispy crown potato bites as the base, or if you want to keep things simple, they make a great snack on their own.
These should be cooked in the air fryer for 14 minutes, stopping halfway to shake and turning them before finishing them.
Air fryer temperatures can vary slightly, therefore the cooking time may change a little. Usually, this isn’t a big deal, but just keep an eye on the crowns toward the end of the cook time, they’re ready when they’re a crispy golden brown.
No, crispy crowns are different than tater tots.
Crispy crowns are made from real potatoes that have been shredded and formed into a patty shape, while tater tots are usually made from mashed potatoes mixed with other ingredients.
My favorite dipping sauce is ketchup, but ranch dressing or any of your favorite creamy dressings would also be delicious. Honey mustard, buffalo sauce, barbecue sauce, and even sour cream are also great options.
