How to Make Teriyaki Chicken Wings in an Air Fryer

  1. In a large glass bowl, combine the baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Add the chicken wings to the bowl and toss to coat evenly.
  3. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray and arrange the wings in a single layer in the basket.
  4. Set Air fry the wings at 375 degrees F for 15 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until they’re lightly golden brown and crispy.
  5. While the wings are cooking, make the teriyaki sauce. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, rice wine vinegar, water, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger (if using). Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes, until it thickens slightly.
  6. Add the cornstarch mixture to the sauce and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, until the sauce thickens to your liking.
  7. When the wings have cooked for 15 minutes, transfer them to a large bowl with half the sauce (reserve the other half for later) and toss with the teriyaki sauce until coated evenly.
  8. Add them back to the air fryer for an additional 5 minutes. If you want to add a nice char, Broil them at 400 degrees F for 5 minutes more.
  9. Remove the wings from the air fryer basket, brush on the remaining sauce. Sprinkle the sesame seeds and green onions over the wings and serve the wings on a serving platter with your favorite sauces for dipping.

Storage and Reheating Notes

How to Store Air Fryer Wings:

If you somehow manage to have leftovers (seriously, how did you do that?), you’ll want to store them properly to maintain their flavor and texture. Place the cooled chicken wings in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

REHEATING INSTRUCTIONS:

Reheating in the Air Fryer: To bring your chicken wings back to their former glory, preheat your air fryer to 350°F (180°C). Place the wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure they’re not overcrowded. Heat for 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they’re heated through and crispy. You can also brush a little extra teriyaki sauce on them before reheating for that extra sticky goodness.

Reheating in the Oven: If you don’t want to bust out the air fryer again, you can reheat your wings in the oven. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the wings in a single layer on the baking sheet, and if you want, brush on a little extra teriyaki sauce for added flavor. Bake for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the wings are heated through and crispy.

Please note that reheating in the microwave is not recommended, as it can result in soggy wings. And nobody wants a soggy wing, am I right?

Helpful Tips & Substitutions

  • To ensure the wings cook evenly and get crispy, it’s important to arrange them in a single layer in the air fryer basket. You may need to cook the wings in batches if your air fryer basket is small.
  • It’s important to use baking powder instead of baking soda to coat the wings. Baking powder helps to create a crispy texture on the wings.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the wings. The USDA recommends that chicken should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.
  • If you don’t have cornstarch, you can use arrowroot powder or potato starch as a thickener for the teriyaki sauce.
  • If you want to make your own teriyaki sauce, you can adjust the amounts of soy sauce, brown sugar, and rice wine vinegar to your taste. You can also add other ingredients like maple syrup, sweet marsala wine, or coconut aminos to create different flavor profiles.
