How to Make Sausage Balls in the Air Fryer

  • Open the breakfast sausage and crumble it into a large bowl. (This makes it easier to combine)
  • Add the shredded cheese, pancake mix, seasoning salt, and milk (milk helps bind the mixture) to the bowl and use your hands to incorporate all the ingredients well.
  • Spray your air fryer basket with olive oil.
  • Use a 1 tablespoon cookie scoop to scoop out individual sausage balls. Roll them gently to round them out, then place them all in your prepared air fryer basket (it’s ok if the sausage balls are touching each other, just make sure not to stack them on top of each other in layers or they won’t cook evenly).
  • Cook for 10 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Helpful Notes:

  • Make sure you check for doneness before you take your sausage balls out of the air fryer. Use a thermometer to make sure the internal temperature is 160 F or cut one open to check that the meat is cooked through.
  • One of the best ways to mix these sausage balls is by using your hands. You can use clean gloves if you’re more comfortable, but using your hands will help break up the sausage and incorporate seasonings more evenly.
  • This recipe can be doubled to accommodate more hungry bellies, but you’ll want to cook them in two batches, so the air fryer isn’t overcrowded.
  • You can substitute other types of sausage or cheese in this recipe to suit your tastes.

Storage and Reheating Instructions:

You can absolutely save your leftover sausage balls for later. This dish stores and reheats well and tastes great the second time around, too!

IN THE FRIDGE: Store in an airtight container or Ziploc bag in the fridge for up to 3 days.

IN THE FREEZER: Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, then place in a Ziploc bag or airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months.

REHEATING INSTRUCTIONS: Turn your air fryer to 350 F and place your leftover sausage balls back in the basket until hot, usually about 10 minutes. You can also reheat them in the oven the same way.

FAQS

CAN I MAKE THESE SAUSAGE BALLS IN THE OVEN INSTEAD?

Yes, you can! This is helpful especially if you want to cook two or three batches at once. Place them in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes until cooked through.

CAN I MAKE SAUSAGE BALLS AHEAD AND FREEZE THEM?

Yes, you can make the sausage balls ahead of time and freeze them for another day. Make your sausage mixture and freeze as is in a flattened Ziploc bag. You can also pre-shape the meat mixture into balls and set them on a baking sheet. Freeze the balls on your baking sheet for about 30-45 minutes, place them in Ziploc bags, and put them back in the freezer.

WHAT’S THE BEST DIP FOR SAUSAGE BALLS?

We love dipping our sausage balls in ketchup, maple syrup, and honey mustard. If you like a bit of a spicy kick, try sweet chili sausage or hot sauce!
